Phoenix Brophy Prep captain and defenseman Jonathan Carkeek doesn't even remember the score from last year's season-ending game, a loss to Phoenix Pinnacle in the semifinals.

The sting from that defeat pales in comparison to what Brophy felt the year before when they lost 6-0 to Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep in the championship match.

"They've been tough years, and it's horrible to be so close, especially for the seniors," Carkeek said. "I'm lucky I have a third chance."

The final playoff push wraps up a lengthy season that started with practices in August. Brophy (13-5-2) won its opening tournament but struggled after that to find consistency. Fortunately for them, the ample time before the postseason enabled them to fine-tune their play.

But Brophy is experienced and anxious to end its season with a victory.

"I think they're really determined to figure it out and finish it off this year," Murrietta said.

AZ High School Hockey Association is seeking volunteers for the upcoming playoffs.

DYHA and the Phoenix Firebirds would like to congratulate Jon Carkeek. He has been officially tendered by the Texas Tornados of the (NAHL) to play for the U18 AAA Firebirds team. 

Head Coach Todd Collins says he is very excited for Jon . This is a great stepping stone for his hockey career as he will be playing for one of the Top Junior A programs in the country. Tornados are known for sending hundreds of players on to NCAA schools. A few DYHA notibles such as Dave Spina (Boston College), Brad Flaishans (University of New Hamphire), and Jon Bobb (Army) to name a few. I am confident that Carkeek will have a successful future as he is a first class young man on and off the ice.

Carkeek is a Hard nosed blue liner that brings incredible grit and toughness along with his leadership capability. At 6'0 190 lbs, Carkeek makes it a habit at overpowering his opponents.

Carkeek thrives in the Defensive zone and winning his one on one battles in the corners. He has a great work ethic, skates well and has a hard, accurate shot from the blueline. Carkeeks physical presence makes him a fan favorite!

The JV team was so dominant in their division that they have officially been moved up to Varsity Division 3A.

Congratulations to both Varsity 3A and Varsity 5A teams for winning their divisions in the Labor Day Tournament.

The coaches will be having discussions with the players about expectations for this year and expect a number of JV players to be called up to the Varsity squad.
